What Does the Help of Allah Look Like?

Part 3 of 4 (see below for other parts)

Allah Ta'ala tells us in Surah An-Nasr:

"When comes the Help of Allah (to you, O Muhammad against your enemies) and the conquest (of Makkah),

And you see that the people enter Allah’s religion (Islam) in crowds,

So glorify the Praises of your Lord, and ask for His Forgiveness. Verily, He is the One Who accepts the repentance and forgives."

What Surah An-Nasr mentions of people entering the religion of Allah in crowds took place in the 9th year after hijrah, after the conquest of Makkah. In fact, the 9th year after hijrah was known as the year of delegations as delegations of Arab tribes came to pledge allegiance to our beloved prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and his Islamic State, after Quraysh were defeated.

During those 9 years, most of the Arab tribes (idol worshippers) were watching and waiting to see how the battle between the Muslims and Quraysh would play out. For the Muslims, those 9 years were filled with battles, victory, loss, joy, fear, justice, mistakes and steadfastness. Despite all the challenges, the sahaba may have wavered occasionally but they never lost courage and never lost their nerve; they persevered until Allah gave them victory over Quraysh. During this time there was dawah or calling people to Islam and some did become Muslim. However, it seems that the Arab tribes, much like people today, followed the aphorism

'Might is Right' and only became Muslims in 'crowds' after witnessing who the winning side were.

We seem to have this romanticised picture of what victory from Allah will look like and that image doesn't seem to include the 9 years of struggle and strife experienced by our beloved Prophet (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and the sahaba. We sometimes wonder how we would be if we were with them. Maybe we imagine ourselves to be brave and intelligent. Maybe we even wonder how they could have made some of the mistakes that they did; surely, we wouldn't have made those...

However, in recent times, at the first signs of trouble and realising that victory is not smooth sailing, we lost our bottle. The problem we have today is that, as an ummah, we lost our nerve early on fuelled by our ignorance of what the help of Allah looks like. If we persevere like they did then maybe we will also witness people entering Allah's religion in crowds.
