Taliban: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

(A response to a comment made on Shaheer Choudhury's Islam21C article: CAGE solemnly marks 20 years since Dasht-i-Leili & Qala-i-Jangi massacres)

A Muslim brother commented under this article:

"ALL Muslims need to remember these massacres and tortured of our brethren of Qala I jangi, Dasht I Leili and Shebarghan.

Our kids and children need to be introduced to it, if not already

Alhamdulillah. It is with the blood of these and other martyrs that we attained the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan"

Taliban Part 2:  If by the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan you mean the current Taliban's emirate established since 2021 then I disagree. The Taliban of Mullah Omar had nothing to do with 9/11. Their methodology for reviving the ummah had nothing to do with that of Usama bin Laden's methodology. Yet, they refused to negotiate with the Americans on handing him over-at the expense of having an all out war declared on their small, already war-ravaged nation. They and the foreign fighters who were killed mercilessly would never have agreed to allying with the Americans against fellow Muslims. However, this new Taliban of today and their emirate are willing to make deals with Americans against their fellow Muslims.

Then there is the issue of the Taliban's trade deal with the state of China despite the horrific human rights abuses carried out on the Uyghurs. This would be akin to the brothers who were shot to death in the shipping containers agreeing to make massive trade deals with Israel despite the oppression of the Palestinians!

No. The blood of these and other martyrs was not for attaining the current Taliban's emirate. Their ideals were far more lofty. Their methods were far more noble. Despite the years of courage and sacrifice, Afghanistan has become another Muslim land in which the scent of musk has been replaced by the stench of politics.

This Taliban are trapping themselves within the systems created by the disbelievers and in the agreements made with them and tomorrow, just like militarily stronger nations like Turkey and Pakistan, they will also be saying that they can't help oppressed Muslims or make the right decisions according to what is pleasing to Allah because their hands are tied. In fact, the articles/podcasts and comments on Islam21C regarding the Taliban, and even Turkey and Pakistan are so confusing. Turkey and Pakistan accept Uyghur refugees but also allow their police forces to raid Uyghur houses and detain or send them to China. Isn't this confusion known as cognitive dissonance? In order to reduce it, maybe existing positive beliefs about these nations and their 'models' of how Muslims should rule, need to be changed.

Wal-hamdu lillahi rabbil 'alamin (March 2023 originally a comment made in 2021 that was never published on their website-it has now been amended to include more information)
