The Two Piece 'Jilbaab' Controversy

When Shaykh al-Albaani mentioned the two piece 'jilbaab' known as a 'Malaa’at-uz-Zamm' worn by some practising Muslim women in Syria, he was talking about the first two photos below, a loose skirt (tannoorah) with a big scarf. Sadly, nowadays many Muslim women interpret a two piece 'jilbaab' as a skirt and blouse like in the other three photos.

Shaykh al-Albaani said: “A tannoorah is a skirt that is affixed to the waist with an elastic strap. So naturally it is wide and ampleA woman wears this from here, thus covering the entire lower part of her body. Then over this tannoorah, which is called a kharraatah (skirt) in Syria, is placed the upper part of the garment, which is placed over the head and which a woman uses to cover her head, shoulders, sides, hips and even the belt strap that is tightened around the waist by this tannoorah..." (From Masaa’il Nisaa’iyyah Mukhtaarah, pgs. 125-131)

Please note that there may be differences of opinion on even the acceptability of 'Malaa’at-uz-Zamm' as a jilbaab but the point that I would like to highlight is that it is wrong for some Muslimahs to use Shaykh al-Albaani's fatwa to justify the wearing of skirts and blouses, like above, that definitely do not fulfil the requirements of a jilbaab and infact remind you of the stern warning of our beloved prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) when he said,

“There are two types of the people of Hell that I have not seen yet: men with whips like the tails of cattle, with which they strike the people, and women who are clothed yet naked, walking with an enticing gait, with something on their heads that looks like the humps of camels, leaning to one side. They will never enter Paradise or even smell its fragrance, although its fragrance can be detected from such and such a distance.”

(Narrated by Ahmad and by Muslim in al-Saheeh)
